Honey, let's talk about money

We all know it's emotional, but financial tools don't seem to get it.

I’ve always wanted more inputs for my lit reviews

Like most researchers, Lit Reviews are my B-roll, always on in the background, helping me keep a pulse on what’s happening in the world. I’m an old-school Sheets user, anyone who has worked with me knows: that’s where my log of signals and trends live. News has always my #1 source, plus fringe blogs/newsletters, and whatever free reports (e.g. Forrester, McKinsey) I can get my hands on.

But one thing still feels consistently out of reach: solid foundational research that wasn’t conducted with a specific product or concept in mind.

Yes, there are amazing organizations contributing to a corner of what I’m talking about such as Pew Research Center. And there’s academic research, but there isn’t a centralized place where our collective atomic insights create new breadth.

This was supposed to be a segue to the core of this newsletter, but it’s becoming a digression. Sorry!

From aspiration to reality

When I started Velocity Ave, one of my big aspirations was to do independent research and make it available to the public. After two successful years of client work, we’ve released our first edition of this vision. And it’s about a topic that affects everyone.

💸 Money.

Cue Pink Floyd’s "Money." (but seriously please listen to it as the soundtrack when you read the report).

It’s Not Just About the Money explores how respondents (n=1,000) experience money—not just as currency, but as emotion, identity, memory, and power. How money shows up in our relationships, our habits, our inner scripts.

We asked our 1,000 respondents to share an object that describes their relationship with money (here are nine). The full report includes many more with direct quotes.

The report is free, you just need to fill out four short questions - then it’s emailed to you (we’ve used Zapier for this workflow and are thoroughly impressed).

As a thank you for your continued support and confidence in me (even when I disappeared to work on the book), there’s a direct link below my signature, so you can skip the form. I also added a few very raw musings.

My team at Velocity Ave is excited to share this work. If it sparks anything for you, please reach out on LinkedIn.

From my brainheart to your inbox.

Warmest,
Maya
